The human imagination is both our greatest asset and liability. Ideas change the world, for good or ill. Their consequences have forged our existence through millennia, leaving us continually standing on the cusp of change.

Today, that change has never been so rapid or far-reaching. In 1859, when the electric telegraph was one of the new wonders of the world, French historian, Jules Michelet, wrote:

"At this truly solemn era, when the network of electricity is spread over all the face of the earth, centralising universal thought, and permitting the world at last to know itself – what sort of soul shall we have to give it?"

The question resonates with us today as we stand in our own era, the responsibilities of our future before us.

With networks of electricity connecting and centralising universal thought in previously unimaginable ways, is our world permitted at last to know itself, and if so – what sort of soul shall we have to give it?
